Prayer Lessons On David
In the Bible no one prayed more than David earning him one of the most colorful prayer characters of our scriptures. His life taught us powerful lessons on prayers. From David we learnt that there are things God empowers us to do and then leaves to us.
If the speculation is true, David was anointed king at seventeen when Saul was still sited as king. However, God’s anointing is all we need to carry out His assignment; anointing is God’s enablement on a person to do things that are beyond his/her capability. God surely will not anoint us to do what we can naturally do. Therefore, by anointing David, God gave him all he needed to assume the throne and thereby left it to him.
However, for twenty-three years David was living in caves and holes like rats; twice Satan granted him opportunities to kill Saul in order to corrupt his throne and twice he rejected the offer. What then could David have done to take power? This brings us to how he finally got rid of King Saul whom God deposed immediately He anointed David as king. In 1 Sam. 26: 9-10 we read:
“9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD’s anointed, and be guiltless? 10 David said furthermore, As the LORD lives, the LORD shall strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish”.
In verse 10 David finally exercised the kingly authority invested in him by placing a pronouncement on Saul. Of course, he must have been praying for these twenty-three years but obviously not as a king but a fugitive. He put three options on Saul and the Lord chose the war option. Up until then, Saul was always fighting with the enemies winning some and losing some. However, the very next war after David’s pronouncement claimed his life! In Isa. 54: 17 we read:
“No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, says the LORD”.
Are there things you’ve been begging God for but that are your direct responsibility to take charge of? We have a heritage and power as God’s children. We are the one to condemn the lies of Satan against God’s word in our lives. We are commanded to resist the devil and are promised that he will flee from us — if we submit to God (James 4: 7). Yes, God judges but we pray it to happen
